The Storyboard

You should aim to complete two versions of a storyboard

Version A. (Photograph or video each shot and upload) - to last ONE Minute

Draw each shot, identifying key information - Shot distance, angles, movement.
Number each tile in sequence and add the time duration for each shot.
It should last ONE minute.

Version Two

Animatic - This will be a video version of your storyboard - you add a commentary over the top of each shot explaining each shot - you can add additional version here about the kind of editing techniques that you using, the location, lighting used, choices for costume etc.  This will obviously last a lot longer and will last upto 10 minutes because of the spoken detail.

AS Media - 2014-15 - First Practical Task - Using a camera and basic editing.

Your Foundation portfolio (coursework) requires you to make the opening to a thriller film.  This will require high levels of skill in the use of both a camera and editing.  This task is the first step in preparing you for this task (which you will do next term)

1. Work in groups of 3

2. The sheet given out in class identifies the shots that you have to take.
3. Each group member will shoot all 11 shots (Thus, there will be 33 in total).
4. Each group member will edit their  own 11 shots with accompanying titles and a music soundtrack.
5. You will be given some lesson time for the camera work, however, your editing will need to do done in your own study time.

Top Tips.
a) Use a whiteboard at the start of each clip to indicate the type and owner of the shot.

b) Always set the white balance and reset it if you alter the direction of the camera or enter a new environment.

c) Make a sandwich - "Camera rolling, Speed and Action!  Cut!

d) Ensure the camera is attached securely and in the correct direction to the tripod arm.

e) Conduct a risk assessment of each location before you start to shoot.  Record this in MS on your footage.

Titling

Each group member is to blog 3 opening credits of their own choice.  Try to use existing thrillers from film or drama.

Analyse each - explain the decisions that have been made and how they are being used to communicate further information to the audience.

You can consider colour, style and effect of font
Placement
Any backdrop to credits if NOT placed on Moving image
How credits appear on screen

Editing

We have the impression that some group members are not really involving themselves fully in then editing process.  It must be a group process.  You should all be involved in then decision making process and be able to write about these, particularly in your evaluation.

Deadline for evaluation is end of term

Titling

On your blog, you should now post a discussion of 3 title sequences of your own choice - try to use thrillers from either TV Drama or Film. Ensure that you consider how the film title, graphics, music, and placement, all work in the overall construction of the sequence. Do they contribute anything to the meaning about character, mood, atmosphere or any aspect of narrative.

http://www.artofthetitle.com/A very useful site for looking at title and credit ideas.

A useful short YOUTUBE interview with title designers another useful link

Do NOT simply reproduce an analysis of those that we have covered in class.

This is also a good interview to watch on YouTube.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbhi-JICKKI

Your credits should include atleast the film title, and your names need to be clear.

Deadline approaching

Friday March 21st 2014.

This Friday is the deadline for the editing of your film footage.

This should include your image editing, sound editing (Foleys, dialogue and soundtrack (COPYRIGHT FREE) )

Some of you are well on course to meet this deadline.

Missing deadlines does have consequences and results in your overall Research and Planning mark being reduced (Time Management).

Partial missing of the deadline (it is clear to us that you are pretty much on course and just have a few things to complete) will be penalised.
However, if we are really concerned that you are falling well behind schedule, a letter will also be sent home to a parent/guardiann alerting them to our concerns.

Don't forget that we are also making judgements as to your suitability to progress into year 2 of this subject.

YOU ARE NOW IN THE FILMING PHASE - NEXT DEADLINE IS FRIDAY MARCH 7TH

Deadline Three – Filming

Your Storyboard should now be completed and posted as an animatic.  The more carefully that you plan each shot, the better your finished product.   Also, all planning for the filming should be completed - props, setting, lighting, actors, locations, make up, costume, health and safety etc etc.

Evidence it - Take photos / shoot video (on your phone is fine) of you recording your footage / organising your shoot.  Provide a written or recorded justification of the decisions that you make / any mistakes that you have made - evaluate the process as you complete your filming - how did it go and why do you think this - be critical!!!

Make sure that there is clear evidence of your presence on the filming set.

Can you show evidence of preparing costume, lighting, props, make up, giving instructions to your actors,  etc.

Record masses of footage - take multiple takes of each shot to give yourself choices when it comes to editing.

By the deadline below: – all “rushes” (unedited, raw footage) to be completed and logged onto the Mac network as a rough cut into the correct file (Locate AS block and group).

All Filming processes, decisions and choices clearly recorded on the group blog. Each of you must contribute to this.

All the time make comparisons with real thriller films to justify your choice of techniques and narrative structure.

Again, use blog format fully and creatively.
